How to Reduce Patient Pain

Every doctor knows that despite his or her good intentions sometimes they cause patient pain. Patient pain and anxiety are the number one complaints many people have when they receive procedures. For example, the number one complaint for people getting Botox is pain. The pain only lasts for a few seconds but it is quite intense. For Botox patients this pain is caused when needles are used to inject Botox into the skin. Many other procedures require needles or probes and they cause intense patient pain. Acute pain is the most common complaint for a whole host of short-term procedures and exams. Tears, winces, greeting of teeth, and an occasional scream are not unusual. Below is a partial list of short-term common procedures and exams that almost always start with a considerable amount of pain.

The solution to short-term pain is complicated. If you give the patient aggressive pain blocking medications or gases the patient will take a long time to recover. The recovery time requires a recovery room, careful monitoring and substantial expense. This approach works but it’s not very feasible. Until now there have been no real good options to reduce patient pain.

In 2015, Strata Medical Innovations, patented the first handheld nitrous oxide inhaler. This nitrous oxide inhaler called Hand-Held Nitrous, solves the problem of short-term, acute pain. The device delivers 16 g of nitrous oxide gas which puts the patient into a state of minimal sedation within seconds. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, has been used for almost a century to treat acute pain. But until now no one could make it available in an easy to use, disposable application. Nitrous oxide gas takes effect in seconds and greatly reduces the sensation of pain and anxiety. The physician completes the procedure and within just a few minutes the sedative effect ends and the patient fully recovers. Reducing patient pain improves patients outcomes and patient satisfaction.
